About

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomics research. Our Faculty apply and explore genomic technologies at scale to advance understanding of biology and improve health. Making discoveries not easily made elsewhere, our research delivers insights into human, evolutionary and pathogen biology. 

Applicants to the Institute's 4-year PhD Programme will be awarded a Wellcome Sanger Institute 4-year PhD Studentship if they are successfully accepted onto the Programme (unless they already have their own externally funded studentship award).

Our PhD Programme equips students with a unique blend of experimental and informatics skills, maximising their competitiveness for future opportunities.

Our funded studentships provide full financial support including University tuition fees, regardless of nationality. Maintenance is covered for four years at Wellcome Sanger Institute PhD Studentship rates and University tuition fees are covered for the requisite three years.

Students are also able to be reimbursed for Student Visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs.

In addition, up to £1500 per year can be provided for students to attend national and international scientific meetings.

Key dates

Applicants are required to apply directly to the Wellcome Sanger Institute by following the instructions in the "How to apply" section of the 4-year PhD Programme page on the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s website by Thursday 27th November 2025 (09:00 GMT).

The reference submission deadline is Thursday 4th December 2025 (09.00 GMT).

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an in person PhD Interview Day on Monday 26th January 2026. If shortlisted candidates are unavailable on the 26th January, they can be interviewed via videoconference during the preceding two weeks.

If applicants have not heard from us by Monday 12th January 2026, they should assume that they have not been shortlisted for interview.

Interview candidates will know whether they have been made a studentship offer by the end of January 2026.

Successful candidates are then required to apply for admission to the University of Cambridge via the Applicant Portal.
