About

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is one of the world's premier genomics research institutes and is at the forefront of this fast-developing field. We use large-scale DNA sequencing, informatics and analysis of genetic variation to further our understanding of gene function in health and disease, and the genomic diversity of complex organisms.

Applicants to the Wellcome Sanger Institute's 4-year PhD Programme will be awarded a Wellcome Sanger Institute 4-year PhD Studentship if they are successfully accepted onto the Programme (unless they already have their own externally funded studentship award).

Key dates

Applicants are required to apply directly to the Wellcome Sanger Institute by following the instructions in the "How to apply" section of the 4-year PhD Programme page on the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s website by Tuesday 28th November 2023 (09:00 GMT).

The reference submission deadline is Tuesday 5th December 2023 (09.00 GMT).

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend interviews on Monday 22nd January 2024. It is hoped that these interviews will take place in person rather than by videoconference, but this will depend on the circumstances at the time. If shortlisted candidates are unavailable on the 22nd January, they can be interviewed via a series of videoconference interviews during the preceding two weeks.

If applicants have not heard from us by Monday 8th January 2024, they should assume that they have not been shortlisted for interview.

Interview candidates will know whether they have been made a studentship offer by the end of January 2024.

Successful candidates are then required to apply for admission to the University of Cambridge via the Applicant Portal.
