About

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is one of the world's premier genomics research institutes and is at the forefront of this fast-developing field. We use large-scale DNA sequencing, informatics and analysis of genetic variation to further our understanding of gene function in health and disease, and the genomic diversity of complex organisms.

Applicants to the Wellcome Sanger Institute's 4-year PhD Programme will be awarded a Wellcome Sanger Institute 4-year PhD Studentship if they are successfully accepted onto the Programme (unless they already have their own externally funded studentship award).

Key dates

Applicants are required to apply directly to the Wellcome Sanger Institute by following the instructions in the "How to apply" section of the 4-year PhD Programme page on the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s website by Thursday 2nd December 2021 (09:00 GMT).

The reference submission deadline is Thursday 9th December 2021 (09.00 GMT).

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend interviews on Monday 24th January 2022. Due to the current pandemic, these will take place via videoconference rather than in person. If shortlisted candidates are unavailable on the 24th January, they can be interviewed via a series of videoconference interviews during the preceding two weeks.

Successful candidates are then required to apply for admission to the University of Cambridge via the Applicant Portal.

If applicants have not heard from us by Monday 10th January 2022, they should assume that they have not been shortlisted for interview.

Interview candidates will know whether they have been made an offer by the end of January 2022.
