About

The Institute of Astronomy receives a number of STFC-funded PhD studentships each year. These cover full University and College Fees at the Home fee rate and a stipend of £21,805 for three and a half years and are mainly available to students with Home-fee status, and a small number of Overseas applicants (up to 30%). All eligible applicants are automatically considered. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in late February. Please see our PhD Funding page for more details.

In addition the Institute of Astronomy will ensure that students have access to funding to attend conferences and workshops.

The STFC DLA will be able to offer a limited number of studentships to international students (EU and non-EU), and funding from UKRI will cover fees at the UK rate and the standard maintenance allowance to support living costs. For international students who are successful in winning a DLA studentship, the University of Cambridge will currently offer a waiver to cover the difference in cost between International and UK fees. More information about fee status is available on the university website.

Funding will also be available for research trips and conferences.

Academic merit

If you accept this award you will be required to attend a programme of training sessions that address the key areas identified by the UKRI Statement of Expectation. You must also agree to put the name of the fund of any papers you publish and submit an annual progress report.
