About
In accordance with Dr Smith's particular research interests, organic chemistry and broader areas relating to molecular life sciences, part of the residual portion of his bequest was directed to Harvard University to fund a PhD studentship programme for the prospective Harvard and Cambridge students. The Herchel Smith Research Studentships are among the most prestigious studentships offered by the universities.
The first Herchel Smith PhD studentships were awarded in 2008. Cambridge presently recruits three to four HS PhD students annually (for a four-year period of study), while Harvard recruits five HS PhD students annually (for a two-year period of study).
At Cambridge the Herchel Smith Research Studentships provides cover for tuition fees, a highly competitive stipendiary award as well as other costs.
Successful applicants will be part of a highly engaged community of award holders and fellows, and regular meetings of students and Managers are incorporated into the scheme. Students may also have the opportunity to apply to undertake a two to three month research project at Harvard University as part of their studies.
There is no direct application process for Herchel Smith Research Studentships. Incoming PhD candidates in the relevant disciplines will be nominated for consideration by their departments and the fund's Managers will make offers of awards based on academic merit.
