About

EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Awards (previously known as Doctoral Training Partnership awards) enable departments to support doctoral students across a wide range of Engineering and Physical Science research areas. Due to the flexible nature of the Landscape funding, the number of studentships available each year vary as Departments may leverage other funding opportunities, e.g. with Industry Partners, Colleges and other University funding.

Studentships are fully-funded at the Home fee rate and UKRI stipend level. Funding for consumable costs, and training (which is an integral part of all doctoral studentships), are also provided. Up to 30% of our awards may be made to international students.

 All eligible candidates will be considered for this funding. Applicants do not need to indicate that they would like to be considered for a Landscape Award.

In addition to the skills gained during the PhD research, students also undertake a Researcher Development programme, with courses and activities tailored to their needs and selected from a wide range of provision. This equips those completing their doctoral programmes to develop the broad skill set which will make them well-placed to develop into future leaders across a range of careers in the academic, industrial and public sectors.

Students have access to a Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of approximately £1,500 per year, to cover project-specific consumables and equipment.

A suitable project and supervisor(s) must be available. We will also take in to consideration contextual factors including circumstandes that have adversly affected a student's ability to devote themselves fully to their studies, or a background of educational or social capital disadvantage.

Students from groups currently underrepresented in Engineering and Physical Science subjects are particularly encouraged to apply. Amongst UK-domiciled students, this includes women, Black British, British Bangladeshi and British Pakistani applicants. Amongst both UK-domiciled and international applicants, we also particularly welcome applications from people from low-income backgrounds, mature students, care-experienced students, and students from families where no parent or care-giver went to university. EPSRC Doctoral Landscape funded students are expected to abide by the UKRI training grant terms and conditions. They are also required to update their details on Je-S, ResearchFish and Gateway to Research. Any other requirements will be detailed in the formal offer letter.

Key dates

Candidates are considered for EPSRC Doctoral Landscape funding until the University deadline in mid-May by which applications must be made for admission to PhD studies in the following Michaelmas Term but it is wise to make an application by the funding deadline in early December so that you are considered for as many complementary awards as possible.

Early application is recommended as only a limited number of studentships is available. The complexity of the funding award processes means that applicants will be informed as soon as possible from March 2027 whether they have been successful or not, but some awards will not be confirmed until after students' exam results are released in summer 2027. Late awards may be made in collaboration with other funding from the Cambridge Trust, Colleges or industrial organisations.
