About

The Cambridge Biosciences DTP is a four year PhD programme that aims to create highly skilled and employable people. The programme offers training across 23 University Departments/Institutes and 3 Partner Institutes providing access to a wide range of research areas related to the strategic themes of the BBSRC.

We offer two types of DTP studentships:

  • Targeted 
  • iCase

You can choose to select up to two projects, these projects can be from the same or different research areas and can be any combination of project types, including two Targeted projects, two iCASE projects, or one of each.

For each project you select, you will need to provide a short statement explaining your interest in the project. This should include:

  • What interests you about the project;
  • Any discussions you have had with the project supervisor, if applicable; and
  • Relevant projects, experience or coursework that have prepared you for this research area.

You will need to apply through the University’s Applicant Portal. The course is listed as PhD in Biological Sciences.

The award provides:

  • A stipend for four years at the UKRI level (£21,805 in 2026)
  • University Fees at home and international rates
  • Research consumables for four years (£18,000 in total)
  • Professional Internship for PhD students (up to £1,000)
  • Travel and Conferences (£920)
  • Skills training and cohort-building events programme (£2,000)

Academic merit

As part of the studentship, students will be required to undertake a Professional Internship for PhD students (PIPS) of three months at some stage during their study and will be expected to participate in training and cohort-building events with other BBSRC and SBS DTP students.

Targeted students will undertake two ten-week rotations in different labs before commencing their PhD. iCase students are not required to undertake rotations, but they must undertake a placement with their Industrial Partner for a minimum of three months and a maximum of 18 months.

Students will be expected to submit their thesis at the end of the fourth year.
