About

The CAM Doctoral Training Partnership [DTP] is a consortium between Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Cambridge, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council [ESRC].

Our collective environment of excellent research and impact is an ideal complement for the interdisciplinary training of diverse social scientists. CAM-DTP PhD students at the University of Cambridge will join a hub for regional change addressing key societal challenges. We are keen to attract talented doctoral researchers from a wide range of backgrounds. A CAM-DTP studentship award provides maintenance [£19,237 p.a in 24-25] and University Postgraduate Fees at the Home rate.

DTP students also have access to grants for additional training costs, and may apply for further discretionary funding to contribute to fieldwork costs, academic exchange, and collaboration with non-academic organisations. Studentships are available to UK, EU and international candidates.

You MUST be nominated for a CAM-DTP award by your Faculty/Department.

  • Departments will automatically consider all eligible applicants who have applied for admission by the appropriate funding deadline and have indicated that they wish to be considered for funding;
  • Deadlines are specific to the course you are applying to - please refer to the funding deadline provided for your course in the Postgraduate Prospectus;
  • Any queries should be directed to the Faculty/Department in the first instance.


Awards will be offered during the period April to July 2025 via departments. If you have not had any correspondence by 1 August 2025 you may assume you have been unsuccessful. Awards cannot be deferred to the following academic year.

Award details

ESRC-funded PhD studentships are usually 3.5 years, which includes a 3-month Innovation Fellowship (internship).

Longer awards are considered for PhD studentships involving ESRC/CAM-DTP Steers, additional training needs, and/or for students with widening participation characteristics.

DTP students are also required to

  • Attend compulsory induction, cohort-building and training sessions;
  • Participate in the Development Needs Analysis programme;
  • Undertake a three month placement outside of the University (known as an Innovation Fellowship)
  • Submit their PhD thesis by the studentship end date

CAM-DTP will be monitoring and developing strategies to more effectively attract and award ESRC funding to traditionally marginalised groups. Based on previous data, CAM-DTP has identified four targeted Widening Participation steers where there is a history of admissions/funding gaps. 

  • mature PhD students (over 25 years old) 
  • students with undergraduate and/or master’s degree from a university not on the Sutton Trust list of leading UK universities (www.suttontrust.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/entryToLeadingUnis-1.pdf) 
  • students from BAME backgrounds 
  • students specifically from British Black, British Pakistani and British Bangladeshi backgrounds

Your faculty/department must nominate you for a CAM-DTP studentship. We do not take direct applications from candidates.

If your Department nominates you for an CAM-DTP studentship, you will be required to complete an additional form detailing, amongst other things, your previous training and experience (Development Needs Analysis form), which will determine the length of the studentship you are offered.

You will also be invited to complete a series of confidential questions relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity. This will enable nominees to declare confidentially circumstances relating to under-representation.
